By Moki S. Mokondo in Buea for Fako News Centre

The staff of the Buea Regional Hospital and inhabitants of the entire municipality have been called on to throw their weight behind the new director of the hospital, Dr. Martin Mokake to enable him succeed in executing the new task assigned to him. Speaking during the technical and administrative handover ceremony on Friday 16 August, 2019, the outgoing Director, Dr Orock Enow, explained that of all his achievements as head of the medical facility, he counts it all joy that he has been replaced by someone he has groomed. While recounting his first meeting and work life with Dr.Mokake, he noted that the young medical doctor is devoted and has the potentials to run the hospital as a director. The outgoing director however, encouraged the staff of the hospital to effectively collaborate and give their new director all the support he needs.

On his part, one of the Deputy Mayors of the Buea Council, Mosoko Edward Motove siting in for the Mayor, cautioned the staff and the Buea population not to undermine the age of the young director whose appointment came out of hard work. He drew the attention of the new director to the fact that it is difficult to work at home but maintained that he can still succeed by holding firm to strict administrative principles.

While commissioning the young director to his new functions, the South West Regional Delegate for Health, Dr.Ebongo Zacchaeus Nanje, enjoined Dr.Mokake to improve on the level of hygiene and sanitation especially in the wards and hospital surrounding, put an end to the parallel and illegal sails of medications and other medical products within the hospital, ensure the effective presence of all staff at work through the biometric electronic attendance machine, amongst others. It should be noted that one of Dr.Mokake’s campaigns immediately after his appointment has been ensuring hygiene and sanitation. The staff of the Buea Regional hospital and some inhabitants have joined him many times to clean the wards and hospital surrounding on different occasionsbecause of his dynamism.

Dr.Mokake who started work at the same hospital as a surgeon on voluntary basis in 2013 is 34 years old. He started his primary education in Government School Wonduma (Bonduma)/Wokoko (Bokoko) and later moved to Baptist High School Buea were he did his secondary and high school education. His love to become a medical doctor took him to Lugwnsk State Medical University in Ukraine, where he completed studies as the best graduating students in 2009. His academic performance further gained him an offer to specialise directly in visceral surgery where he graduated in 2013 with honours. The period of specialisation gave him opportunities to work in Ghana, Nigeria and South Korea.

His love for country brought him back home at the end of his specialisation. He took the national examination for the recruitment of medical specialists into the Cameroon Public Service in 2013 while working on voluntary basis at the Buea regional hospital. His brilliant results got him the job and was sent to the same hospital where he became Head of Surgery. He was also appointed head of Division for Health at the University of Buea while keeping his position as the Head of Surgery at the Buea Regional Hospital. It should be noted that the young medical doctor is also an assistant lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Buea. These are just a few of his many functions and positions he is holding as a medical specialist.

Talking to Fako News Centre, one of his sisters, Julie EnjemaMokake who flew all the way from UK to attend the handover ceremony disclosed that her brother’s passion to save lives is the driving force behind his successes. She explained that becoming a medical doctor has been her brother’s desire from childhood and seeing him excel in his dream gives their family great joy. The effectiveness of this young doctor in handling patients has gained him much popularity around as patients would rather wait for him to attend to them even if he is occupied with other duties.
