On Thursday 1st May 2014, the 128th edition of International Labour Day was celebrated at the Manga Williams Avenue in Limbe.
This is an international event celebrated yearly, where workers in all establishments both of the private and public sectors come together. Also, these workers use this day as an opportunity to channel their respective challenges and difficulties to the government. Workers also express themselves through various groups such as Trade Unions. Furthermore, a theme is adopted every year for the Labour Day. This was a colourful and ceremonial event in Limbe as it was attended by the Senior Divisional Officer for Fako, Government Delegates of the various councils and Presidents of Trade Unions. The theme for this year’s Labour Day in Limbe was “Cameroon Workers-Together lets fight HIV/AIDS”. Limbe being the headquarters of Fako Division also welcomed others from Buea, Tiko, Muyuka, Idenau and Yaoundé.
At the event, there were several speakers, such as Mr Ngomba Eric who is the president of the Configuration of Cameroon Trade Union and Mr. Charles Mbine who is the president of Cameroon Configuration of Autonomous Trade Union. Both of them addressed the various challenges of workers in Cameroon and urged the government to address the issue of poverty and said ‘Cameroonians die more of from stress and poverty than AIDS’. The day was also marked with the beautiful attires of the various workers.
