All roads in Fako Division were directed to Buea on Friday April 9 and Saturday 10, 2010, where relatives, friends, traditional and administrative authorities turned  out to sympathise with the Royal family for the departed wife of the Paramount Chief of Buea.

The mortal remains of the wife of Chief Samuel Moka Lifafa Endeley, Gladys Silo Ramatou Endeley nee Steane, was laid to rest at their Mokunda Palace at 4pm on April 10, 2010 after a solemn church service. The Royal mother bowed out of the earth on March 9, 2010, after she took ill.

Amongst those who paid tribute to the late mother was the former Director of cabinet, Prime Minister’s Office, Cameroon, Hon Paul Njie Meoto and the former Vice-Chancellor, Buea University, now Electoral Board Member of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM), Dorothy Limunga Njeuma nee Effange. The former described the deceased as a wonderful mother who adopted and integrated him into her paternal and maternal families as her first son. In his own words, Hon Meoto recounted her efforts to instil the virtues that have helped to mould him to what he is today.

On her part, the latter described late Mrs Endeley as her role model. Dr. Dorothy Njeuma explained that if she succeeded in the education sector as Vice Minister, pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Buea University and Rector of Yaoundé University I, it was because she always looked to her for guidance and inspiration. ‘’She always encouraged me to perform’’, she added.

It should be noted that late Gladys Silo Endeley was born on July 5, 1928, in Victoria,  now Limbe, to late Carl Makangai Steane and late Princess Jaratou, daughter of the then Lamido of Leande in Garoua.  She did her basic education in Cameroon and then moved to the Aggrey Memorial College, Arochulu, Nigeria, for further studies. She also studied at  Leeds University in England  beteen 1955 and 1958.

Coming back to Cameroon, she held several duty posts with the state before being appointed Mayor of the Buea Municipal Council in 1995. She got married to then Prince, now Paramount Chief of Buea, S.M.L Endeley in 1953, and leaves behind five sons, a daughter, grand and great grand children, her husband and other relatives and friends to mourn her.
